He was born in El Paso, Texas, and grew up in Lansing, Michigan, in a family of both parents gifted in music. He learned to play guitar at age eight and grew up playing guitar and mandolin in local bands.
He gained widespread notoriety after playing for renowned bluegrass king Jimmy Martin at the age of 19 in 1982. He played for his band Sunny Mountain Boys for nine years. He also worked with notable bluegrass artists, including Red Allen and Harley Allen, who was based in Nashville. After Red passed away in 1993, he began working with The Lynn Morris Band. He also played with Chris Jones & The Night Drivers.
From 1999 until 2003, he played guitar and sang with Rhonda Vincent & The Rage. After this gig, he started his solo career and founded Redline. He released many albums with Redline, including Audie Blaylock & Redline album (2009), Cryin Heart Blues (2010), Hard Country (2012), and most recently, Originalist (2019).
